KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 — A sundry shop operator was sentenced to two years’ jail by the High Court here today after he pleaded guilty to the charge of trying to join the so-called IS militant group in Syria last year.
Judge Kamardin Hashim also ordered Mohd Rosmadi Che Daud, 43, from Pengkalan Chepa, Kelantan, to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest on September 25, 2014.
The judge said the court had taken into consideration the seriousness of the offence, the plea and testimony of the accused and the interests of the public in making its decision.
“This is the appropriate punishment for you,” he said before passing down the sentence.
The father of six was arrested when trying to board a flight to Istanbul, Turkey, at the Immigration counter, Departure Hall of the KL International Airport, Sepang at 8.55am on September 25.
He was charged under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code, which carries life imprisonment or for a term which may extend to 30 years, and also liable to fine, upon conviction. The offence is also non-bailable.
Deputy public prosecutor Wan Shahaduddin Wan Ladin prosecuted, while Mohd Rosmadi was represented by lawyer Arik Zakri Abdul Kadir. — Bernama
