GEORGE TOWN, April 2 — The defence trial of a senior female police officer accused of releasing a ‘Casanova’ detainee, has been postponed to Monday.
Magistrate Dianne Ningrad Nor Azhar set the date after granting the application by counsel Danny C. Navarednam who said he did not have today’s date but only April 6 for trial in his record, and was not ready to proceed.
The magistrate reminded Danny who is defending ASP L. Chandkumary, 58, not to repeat the mistake.
Last February 18, the court ordered Chandkumary who had been serving in the police force for more than 20 years, to enter her defence on two charges, and fixed April 2 (today) and April 6 for trial.
Chandkumary is accused of releasing K. Prabaharan, 47, who was being remanded for alleged fraud, at George Town Court Complex at 1.50pm on October 9, 2013.
The charge under Section 225A(1)(a) of the Penal Code carries three years’ imprisonment or a fine or both, upon conviction.
On the second charge, Chandkumary allegedly made a false report at the Northeast Police Station at 8.05pm on October 9, 2013.
She faces a maximum six months’ jail or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both if convicted, under Section 182 of the Penal Code.
Deputy public prosecutor Siti Fatimah Talib appeared for the prosecution. — Bernama
