KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 30 — Over 200,000 people have now been forced from their homes by the worst floods in the nation’s history, according to data from the National Security Council’s Disaster Portal website.

As of 8am today, 235,218 people have been displaced as the northeasterly monsoon, which brings heavy rainfall that typically lasts up to three days at a time, continues to hit the east coast of the peninsula. The current episode is expected to last until tomorrow.

The highest number of evacuees today is in Kelantan with 158,476, followed by Pahang (38,992) and Terengganu (29,974).

Perak recorded 7,572 flood victims, Johor (171) and (33) in Selangor.

There have been 10 deaths so far.

The spike in evacuee numbers comes even as there were reports of floods receding in parts of Kelantan, yesterday.
