GEORGE TOWN, Sept 22 — DAP has declined comment on the ongoing Selangor mentri besar imbroglio, but is convening an emergency sitting of its Central Executive Committee to discuss the issue tonight.

Party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng refused to divulge further details of the meeting except to say that the outcome made will be revealed to the media later.

The Penang chief minister also sidestepped questions over rumours regarding the identity of the Sultan of Selangor’s choice for the position, who is due to be sworn in tomorrow.

“We will wait for the Sultan to make the announcement of the candidate picked, so we do not want to comment until it was announced,” he said at a press conference at his office today.

“For now, let us wait for the meeting tonight and for the Istana (Selangor palace) to announce the mentri besar selected before we say anything,” he said.

Speculation is rife that PKR deputy president Azmin Ali has been picked for the position, instead of the party’s president and sole nominee, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

The Selangor palace confirmed last week that the new mentri besar will be sworn in tomorrow morning, but declined to identify the person ahead of the ceremony.

This afternoon, outgoing mentri besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim revealed that Dr Wan Azizah was not among those shortlisted by the state ruler to replace him.

Khalid, who was the target of an ouster by PKR, sought the Sultan’s consent for his resignation on August 26, which the ruler gave before directing him to remain in a caretaker capacity until a replacement is selected.
