TONGOD, Sept 12 — Sabahans will not be fooled by the actions of certain parties who want to threaten the independence enjoyed by the state after joining Malaysia.

Youth and Sports Assistant Minister Masiung Banah said this was because the people of Sabah understood the value of independence which had contributed to unity, peace, and the development of the state.

He said the people knew how to differentiate what was good and not good for them and the state.

“We should reject the attempts by certain parties who are trying to threaten the independence we have enjoyed all this time by calling for Sabah to leave Malaysia.

“On the contrary, the people of Sabah are happy and appreciative of living in Malaysia which is peaceful and constantly developing,” he said at an Independence Day Celebration at the Tongod district level here today.

The celebrations included a 30-kilometre independence day convoy of 20 government agency vehicles and 57 Tongod youth motorcyclists from Pekan Telupid to Tongod.

Masiung who is also the state assemblyman for Kuamut said understanding the spirit of independence meant the people, especially youths, know the history of the country.

He said it was important that the people are able to recognise the threats to the country which continue to threaten its independence and sovereignty.

He said the younger generation would only truly understand the meaning of independence when they know the history of the nation, society, region and the world. — Bernama
