MALACCA, Sept 10 — Crime index in Malacca has dropped by 440 cases between January and August this year, said Malacca Police Chief Datuk Chua Ghee Lye.

He said 2,412 cases were reported in the first eight months compared to 2,852 cases during the same period last year.

“This achievement is due to the concerted effort and good cooperation from the people in the state towards making Malacca a peaceful and safe state,” he told reporters after attending the Malacca police contingent monthly gathering here today.

He said out of the total, 1,024 cases involving various crimes were solved.

On narcotic-related crimes, he said 3,395 persons were arrested, involving 2,972 cases of drug offences from January to August this year compared to 3,244 persons, involving 2,966 cases during the same period in 2013.

“This showed an increase in arrest of about 4.6 per cent, involving 151 persons,” he said. — Bernama
