KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 — Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today that he is “proud” of his wife’s achievements, adding that the PKR president was well-qualified to take on the post of Selangor Mentri Besar.
Anwar pointed out that Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail had previously led the federal opposition, maintaining that the former practising doctor’s possible rise to govern the country’s richest state is not tied to his own political fate.
“She’s quite qualified in her own right, academically. She was leader of Opposition in the past. She has performed reasonably well. I’m proud of her. And that’s not relevant to my personal political career,” the PKR de facto leader said in a brief news conference at the Duta court complex here.
Anwar was responding to a question on whether Dr Wan Azizah’s nomination as Selangor Mentri Besar candidate signalled that his political era was coming to an end.
A sodomy conviction which Anwar is still appealing crushed his chances of becoming the next Selangor Mentri Besar, while the current state Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim is set to meet the state ruler tomorrow over Pakatan Rakyat (PR)’s retraction of support for him.
