KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 ― Opposition party DAP said today that two of the party’s wings have been ordered to lodge police reports nationwide against the country’s top policeman for refusing to enforce orders from the civil court.
DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng said in a statement that the reports will say that Inspector General of Police is in contempt of the Federal Constitution and has failed to perform his statutory role by refusing to enforce and comply with civil court orders on child custody cases.
The court orders in question require police to help two non-Muslim mothers regain custody of their children from their husbands who have converted to Islam.
“The refusal of the IGP to comply with civil court orders is clearly a breach of statutory duty that has exposed Khalid Abu Bakar as completely unfit for such a high and important position,” Lim’s statement said.
He cited Section 20 of the Police Act of 1967 which states that the police must execute any orders of summons, subpoenas, warrants, legally issued by the courts.
Lim, also the chief minister of Penang, went on to say that time Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s suggestion that such cases must make their way to the country’s highest court fails to address the open contempt of court and defiance statutory duty displayed by the chief of police.
DAP lawmaker Gobind Singh Deo will kick off filing police reports on the matter across the country starting tomorrow, Lim’s statement added.
