SINGAPORE, March 29 — A young man’s TikTok video has gone viral after he popped the question to his girlfriend with an elaborate proposal that involved renting out a movie theatre and editing himself into scenes from the award-winning film Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The video, with some of the flourishes of a tear-jerking Hollywood romance, has captured more than 2.1 million views and 575,000 likes since it was posted on Sunday.

“Theatre proposals (have) been done before but hopefully not an EEAAO (Everything Everywhere All at Once) version LOL,” wrote Le in the video’s caption.

The TikTok does not state where the couple are from, but it appears to be filmed in the United States. It includes footage filmed during the theatre screening.

Le begins the video by sharing how he planned the whole thing: From booking a movie theatre room to editing a movie ticket, and duping his girlfriend Annie into thinking that they would be rewatching the original Everything Everywhere All at Once movie together.

As the movie plays in the cinema, Annie seems to grow suspicious and can be heard asking: “Why’s the quality so bad?”

A few moments later, Le makes a surprise appearance onscreen next to Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh playing the main protagonist in the movie, Evelyn Wang.

“What’s my line again?” he asks an imaginary director offscreen as Annie covers her mouth in disbelief.

Le then appears onscreen dressed up as other characters from the film, including as auditor Deirdre Beaubeirdre in the scene where Evelyn, her husband Waymond and father Gong Gong talk about taxes.

The doctored version of the movie then cuts away to a shot of Le sitting in the front seat of his car.

Le then professes his love for Annie as different clips of her with family and friends play in the background.

“I just want to show you how much you mean to me and how much you mean to your friends and family, and I just want to show you how much I love you,” he said.

“The way you love is so honest and so pure, it’s infectious and it’s shown me how to genuinely love someone as well.”

Annie’s friends then appear onscreen to deliver a series of loving testimonials.

Once the lights in the theatre come on, Annie realises that she is surrounded by the couple’s friends and family.

Le finally goes down on one knee to ask for Annie’s hand in marriage, to which she replies: “Of course, yes!”

TikTok users flocked to the comments section to congratulate the couple. Many shared that the video had brought them to tears and claimed that Le had “set a high bar” for future marriage proposals.

One top comment read: “It’s so nice to see men love this hard. Your video and message to her had me tearing up. This is so sweet.”

Another user wrote: “He found his person to do laundry and taxes with”, referencing a famous line from the highly-acclaimed movie, which took out the Academy Award for best movie at this year’s ceremony.

Others called for the TikTok video to be shared with the cast of the film.

In a follow-up video, Le shared more behind-the-scenes snippets of how he planned his surprise proposal.

He revealed how he filmed his sequences in front of a blue screen before editing himself into scenes from the movie as well as roping in family and friends to help with some of the preparation.

Towards the end of the video, Le shared a doctored movie poster with Annie’s face superimposed over the main character’s, along with the title “Annie-thing Annie-where All at Once”. — Todayonline
