NEW YORK, Oct 8 ― After two years in second place, New York bar The Dead Rabbit Grocery & Grogg has taken the top spot in the annual World's Best Bars ranking from Drinks International Magazine, a global reference in the sector.
Located in Manhattan's Financial District, The Dead Rabbit Grocery & Grogg takes customers into an Old New York ambiance, celebrating Irish-American tradition. Northern Irish duo Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry are on hand to serve whiskey and beer in the ground floor Taproom, where the decor is reminiscent of a traditional Irish pub. Lunch is served daily with oysters, stews and sandwiches on the menu. The upper floor Parlor offers a trendier ambiance, where cocktails created by celebrated bartenders of the nineteenth century are mixed with historical accuracy.
New York, London and the battle for the world's best bars
The reign of London's Artesian bar as world number one is officially over. The watering hole at the Langham Hotel had previously dominated the annual top 50, holding the top spot for no less than four years. Until 2015, the experts at Drinks International Magazine considered this bar the crème de la crème when it comes to hospitality.
London's highest-ranking bar in this year's list is the American Bar at The Savoy, which takes second place after coming fifth last year. This makes for an amusing coincidence, since the US and British metropolises are neck and neck when it comes to nominations. London has five bars in this year's top ten and New York has four, including The Dead Rabbit Grocery & Grogg in first place.
European establishments worth calling into for a cocktail or to soak up the atmosphere include The Clumsies in Athens, Greece, in ninth place, and Candelaria in Paris, France, in 17th place.
Australia is shaping up to be something of a challenger, with emblematic establishments like The Baxter Inn in Sydney (12th) and Black Pearl in Melbourne (22th).
