KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 — The Immigration Department of Malaysia has detained a Bangladeshi man in Kuantan after a viral social media post allegedly showed him holding both a Malaysian international passport and a Bangladeshi passport, even though Malaysia does not permit dual citizenship.
The department said in a statement that the viral post had prompted public concern and led to calls for an immediate investigation.
Immigration Department director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said a joint task force comprising its Pahang office and the National Registration Department Pahang located the man inside a container at Jalan Kuantan Bandar Damansara on July 4.
“The team found a Bangladeshi man inside the container,” he said, adding that officers also discovered two expired Malaysian international passports and a Seafarer’s Service Book belonging to a local citizen.
Six immigration officers carried out the raid at 6.30pm and later took the man to the Kuantan Immigration Office to assist investigations.
Zakaria said the department is working to identify the actual owners of the Malaysian passports and the Seafarer’s Service Book while examining possible elements of unauthorised possession or misuse of Malaysian travel documents.
He advised the public not to speculate until investigations are completed and said firm action would be taken if any breach of the law is found.
