LONDON, June 18 — Tom Hanks has spent more than three decades bringing everyone’s favourite cowboy to life — but it turns out there was one very important thing he never knew about Woody.
During a recent appearance on BBC Radio 1, Hanks was left genuinely stunned after discovering that his beloved Toy Story character actually has a surname, despite having voiced Woody since the franchise debuted in 1995.
“By the way, I only recently discovered that Woody has a surname. Are you aware that Woody has a surname?” host Ali Plumb asked.
Hanks’ answer? Complete surprise.
The Oscar winner admitted he had “no idea” before jokingly wondering if Woody’s full name might simply be “The Sheriff?”
Instead, Plumb revealed that the cowboy’s official name is Woody Pride — a detail longtime Pixar fans have known for years.
The trivia only got more interesting from there.
Plumb added that cowgirl Jessie is also a Pride, revealing, “Jessie’s full name is Jessica Jane Pride.”
That immediately sparked a theory from Tim Allen, Woody’s longtime Toy Story co-star and the voice of Buzz Lightyear.
“Wait a minute. I’d heard this, that they might be related,” Allen chimed in.
When Plumb floated the possibility that Woody and Jessie could be siblings, Hanks wasn’t having it.
“No! Distant cousins, please. Please!” he exclaimed.
While Hanks may have just uncovered one of the franchise’s oldest pieces of lore, he’s already looking ahead to Toy Story 5 — and says fans should prepare themselves emotionally.
Speaking previously to The Hollywood Reporter, Hanks teased what he believes is the most devastating moment in the series so far.
“There’s one of the most heartbreaking scenes I’ve ever seen in any of the Toy Story movies — when that little girl is getting her feelings hurt by what other people are texting about her, and she doesn’t understand why,” Hanks said.
The actor continued, “She doesn’t know what she did wrong, but it hurts, and that is a very prescient thing to have in a motion picture today about little kids and toys, don’t you think?”
If Hanks’ reaction to Woody’s secret surname is any indication, even after five films, Toy Story still has a few surprises left — for audiences and its biggest star alike.
