SINGAPORE, May 29 — The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will be headed by a woman for the first time, after a change of command that will take place later this week.
Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Florence Chua Siew Lian, who is currently the director of the Police Intelligence Department (PID), will assume the top job in CID on June 1, taking over Deputy Commissioner of Police Tan Chye Hee, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said in a media release yesterday.
The 52-year-old will concurrently serve as Deputy Commissioner (Investigations and Intelligence) with effect from the same day. She will also be the first female Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Chua is no stranger to the CID, having previously served as its deputy director, among other key appointments in a 29-year career in the police force, including Commander of Jurong Police Division.
As PID director, she directed intelligence-led operations to dismantle organised crime groups, unlicensed moneylending and scam syndicates, including the crackdown of the largest illegal betting syndicate that was the first case to be prosecuted under the Organised Crime Act.
Chua said she was “honoured” to take on the dual appointment, and praised Tan for his “strong leadership” that has led the investigation fraternity to embark on a “wide-ranging transformation journey to prepare... for the challenges of the future”.
Pledging to continue Tan’s work and working with CID staff to “continuously enhance our crime-fighting capabilities to stay ahead of the criminals”, Chua added: “I also aim to further strengthen the close collaboration between the Investigation and Intelligence fraternities in combating the ever-evolving crimes, so that Singapore remains safe and secure.” — TODAY
