SINGAPORE, Oct 24 — Hazy conditions on the island worsened this morning. Air quality entered the very healthy range at 4am, and the 24-hour PSI had climbed since.

At 11am, the 24-hour PSI is in the 186-229 range. The three-hour PSI is at 178, down from 1am’s 232.

Yesterday, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said the hazy conditions are expected to continue today, with the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) for the next 24 hours is expected to be in the mid to high sections of the unhealthy range over the next 24 hours, and may enter the low end of the very unhealthy range if denser haze is blown in.

Reduced visibility is also expected to persist.

The NEA said that some haze from Kalimantan had spread to the surrounding region, and was being blown in by the prevailing south-easterly winds.

Only one hotspot was detected in Sumatra yesterday due to partial satellite pass and cloud cover over parts of Sumatra.

Moderate to dense smoke haze is still persisting in central and southern Sumatra. Widespread dense haze is observed over Kalimantan, and some of the haze continues to spread to the surrounding sea areas southeast of Singapore, said the NEA.

NEA advised healthy persons to reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion. The elderly, pregnant women and children should minimise prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion, while those with chronic lung or heart disease should avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion.

Persons who are not feeling well, especially the elderly and children, and those with chronic heart or lung conditions, should seek medical attention. — TODAY
