SINGAPORE, June 2 — Teenage blogger Amos Yee will spend the next three weeks in remand to assess his suitability for reformative training.

Prosecutors had sought reformative training for the 16-year-old, who was convicted last month of posting an obscene image online and posting content intended to hurt the religious feelings of Christians. He had rejected serving probation.

Noting that Amos had refused to remove his offending video and blog post, and even reposted fresh offending content up to last evening, Deputy Public Prosecutor Hay Hung Chun said rehabilitation has to be the primary sentencing consideration as these actions “show his conduct, attitude and behaviour”.

Defence lawyer Alfred Dodwell continued to press for a short jail term, arguing that reformative training is not proportionate to Amos' offences. He added that the prosecution can call for an injunction order to have the offending content removed.

Clad in a yellow T-shirt and black pants, Amos appeared calm as court proceedings were going on.

He will appear before the court again on June 23. ― Today
