KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 15 — As 2016 wraps up, Google has announced its annual “Year In Malaysia Search,” a look back on the year’s major events and trends based on what Malaysians searched for most often.

Unsurprisingly, Euro 2016 topped the Top Trending Searches list, followed by Pokemon Go and annual government financial aid programme, BR1M 2016.

While the Rio Olympics also made the top 10, Malaysians mostly searched for entertainment.

Suri Hati Pilot, Train to Busan, MAMA 2016, 7 Hari Mencintaiku and Descendents of the Sun rounded off the top 10, proving once again that Malaysians love their local and Korean showbiz.

When it came to news headlines, Malaysians were interested in world politics, meaning the US elections, Brexit and Zika were on their most-searched news topics.

Similarly, President-elect Donald Trump topped the Trending People of 2016 list. His rival for the White House, Hillary Clinton, came in at No. 10.

The list was rounded off by Atikah Suhaime, in second place, who landed in the spotlight due to an alleged nude photo leak, and Descendents of the Sun heartthrob, Song Joong-ki, in third place.

“Google searches continue to act as a reliable cultural barometer that gives us a real snapshot of the major events, popular individuals and trends that have collectively made an impact in the lives of Malaysians,” said Zeffri Yusof, head of communications and public affairs at Google Malaysia, in a press release.
