KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 — The aggregated Internet bandwidth consumption in the country grew by 105 per cent to 306,970 Megabits per second (Mbps) in the first half of this year, according to the Malaysian Internet Exchange (MyIX).

MyIX is a non-profit organisation initiated by the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in September 2006 and run by Persatuan Pengendali Internet Malaysia.

MyIX chairman Chiew Kok Hin described the growth as exponential compared with 349,277 Mbps for the whole of 2013.

“The consumption almost equalled that of last year and this reflects how much Internet data and content traffic were utilised by both local commercial and residential markets,” he said.

The dramatic growth was attributed to increased smartphone users and social media following, he said at a media workshop organised by MCMC and MyIX here today.

Chiew said MyIX would invest RM5 million to upgrade equipments to enhance its bandwidth capacity to 100 gigabits per second (Gbps) by next year from the existing 40 Gbps.

Meanwhile, MyIX recently signed an international peering agreement with Hutchison Global Communications Ltd, Swiftserve Pte Ltd and Telstra Malaysia Sdn Bhd in addition to the existing peered sites such as Google, Facebook, Akamai, Amazon, Microsoft and Twitter. — Bernama
