SINGAPORE, Sept 29 — Simple advice on 20 everyday first-aid scenarios is now available at the fingertips of smartphone users, with a mobile application launched by the Singapore Red Cross yesterday.

The app offers tips in English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil, as well as videos and quizzes. Scenarios featured include what to do if a person is unconscious and not breathing, accompanied by a step-by-step guide on how to check for signs of breathing and open one’s airway.

Singapore Red Cross chairman Tee Tua Ba said yesterday that the app was part of the organisation’s goal of having a first aider in every home.

The Singapore Red Cross also held a community outreach event yesterday, which saw 100 participants attend talks on injury prevention, providing a safe home for seniors, prevention and early detection of chronic diseases, as well as caregiving for dementia patients. The event was supported by the Eastern Health Alliance and Tampines West Active Ageing Committee, with Senior Minister of State (Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs) Masagos Zulkifli as guest of honour.

Said Mr Masagos, who is also Member of Parliament for Tampines GRC: “I am glad the Singapore Red Cross is working actively with the community to build resilience, especially for and among the elderly. With an ageing population, it is important for us to work together in empowering caregivers, the elderly and the community at large with the skills to build a healthy, vigorous and resilient society. I also applaud the Singapore Red Cross for making first aid even more accessible with the launch of the mobile app.”

Launched in conjunction with World First Aid Day, the app is available for Android and iOS devices. — TODAY
