KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Malaysia’s former charismatic National coach Karl-Heinz Weigang has died of a heart attack in Germany today said the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).
FAM secretary-general Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin when contacted by Bernama confirmed that Weigang, 81, a name synonymous with Malaysian football, had died of a heart attack in Germany.
Weigang’s most notable achievement as the national coach was guiding Malaysia to qualify for the 1980 Moscow Olympics although Malaysia withdrew from playing in Moscow due to an United States-led boycott following the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan.
Apart from being the National coach, Weigang had also coached Perak and led the silver state to two Malaysia Cup victories in 1998 and 2000.
Weigang had returned to Perak as the head coach and Technical Director last year but ended his contract prematurely in February, following Perak’s results in the Super League and was replaced by Aussie Mehmet Durakovic who was the former Selangor coach. — Bernama
