KUCHING, July 30 — The artistic gymnasts from Selangor led the final day of the event at the 18th Malaysia Games (Sukma) here by winning four of the 10 gold medals up for grabs.
Three of the gold medals were obtained by the men through Chau Jern Rong in the rings and parallel bar events, and Tan Fu Jie (pommel horse).
Meanwhile, Nur Eli Ellina Azmi won the gold for Selangor in the floor exercise event.
However, male gymnasts from Terengganu had their fair share of the spoils at the Petra Jaya Unity Stadium.
After winning the silver medal in the team event, they managed to prevent Selangor from dominating the final day by winning three gold medals.
National artistic gymnast Zul Bahrin Mat Asri contributed two gold medals through the horizontal bar and floor exercise events, while Muhammad Abdul Azim Othman bagged the third in the vault event.
“Although there was stiff competition, I tried to overcome the pressure to do well in the final event (horizontal bar). All participants were hoping to win the gold medal in the event. So I had to push aside my worries and focus on producing my best performance.
“The Terengganu (artistic gymnast) squad targeted three gold medals at the Sukma this time. The day before (Thursday) we could only win the silver medal in the team event, so I wanted to get the gold to reach the target,” said Zul Bahrin, who is also part of the 2017 Kita Juara programme.
Selangor emerged overall champions of the event with five gold, two silver and four bronze medals (5-2-4), followed by Penang (3-1-3) and Terengganu (3-1-1). — Bernama
