KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a short-term weather warning, forecasting thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds across multiple states and federal territories until 1.00 pm.

Issued at 10.30 am, the advisory highlights severe weather sweeping across the central and western coasts of the peninsula.

In Selangor, the affected districts include Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Klang, Gombak, Petaling, Kuala Langat, and Sepang, alongside the federal territory of Putrajaya.

Up north in Perak, the warning covers Manjung, Perak Tengah, Bagan Datuk, and Hilir Perak.

Moving south, the alert applies to Port Dickson in Negeri Sembilan, the entire state of Melaka, as well as the Tangkak, Muar, Batu Pahat, and Kota Tinggi districts in Johor.

Across the South China Sea, several regions in East Malaysia are also bracing for heavy downpours. In Sarawak, the warning encompasses Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei (specifically Pakan and Julau), Sibu (Kanowit and Selangau), Kapit (Song, Kapit, and Bukit Mabong), and Bintulu (Tatau).

In Sabah, affected areas include Kuala Penyu in the Interior division, Sandakan (Telupid, Beluran, and Sandakan), and Kudat (Pitas and Kudat), along with the federal territory of Labuan.

According to MetMalaysia, a thunderstorm warning is triggered when there are clear signs of an imminent storm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour, or when such conditions are expected to persist for more than an hour.

These alerts are classified as short-term warnings, with each issuance valid for a period not exceeding six hours.

Residents in the affected areas, particularly motorists and those living in low-lying, flood-prone zones, are advised to exercise caution.
