KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 — Two national junior athletes did the nation proud by qualifying for the World Junior Championships in Poland from July 19 to 24.
Triple jumper R. Kirthana and hurdler Rizzua Haizad Muhammad produced splendid performances at the 17th Asian Junior Athletics Championships held at the Thong Nhat Stadium in Vietnam to book their tickets.
Kirthana who competed in the women’s triple jump surpassed the 13.00m qualifying mark for the world championships by clearing a distance of 13.20m today to win the gold.
The Bukit Jalil Sports School athlete beat two athletes from Kazakhstan, namely Mariya Ovchnnikova and Anna Gorodkova, who finished second and third with 13.19m and 12.97m respectively.
Hurdler Rizzua Haizad who competed in the men’s 110m hurdles clocked 13.87s in the semi-finals to beat the qualifying time of 14.20s to book his berth.
In the final, Rizzua Haizad clocked 14.00s to clinch the gold after beating Poulose Maymon from India (14.02s) and Tao Zhang from China (14.05s). — Bernama
