SERDANG, June 7 — The Malaysian contingent still has time to achieve the target of acquiring 56 per cent of the total number of medals at the SEA Games in Singapore.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said there were a handful of athletes who participated in ‘warm-up’ events, which affected the ratio.

“We need to see the progress from day to day. There are some events contested by athletes which are warm-up events for them. For example, in swimming, there are swimmers who took part in the 200m freestyle, when their favourite event is the 100m freestyle.

“It (200m freestyle) is not their ‘favourite’ event, it is just a warm-up event. This affects our target a little. So when there is an event contested without any hope of a medal, it will complicate the target a little,” he said.

Khairy said this after attending the ‘Art of Speed’ programme at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) here, today. — Bernama
