KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 — Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One (F1) driver Nico Rosberg has expressed his support for Malaysia to continue hosting the F1 race at Sepang International Circuit (SIC) next season.
The SIC is in talks with Formula One Management (FIM) for an exension of Malaysia’s F1 contract, the outcome of which is expected to be known by March 29.
“Sepang is a very special place for the Petronas team,” Rosberg told reporters after attending a promotional programme here today. “It’s an important (venue) for me as I had several podium finishes there. I hope that we can come back for many more years.”
German-born Rosberg described the Sepang circuit as “fantastic”, with big crowds in attendance. He expressed confidence that he and teammate Lewis Hamilton would continue to lead the race at Sepang at the Malaysian F1 Grand Prix next weekend.
Hamilton won the 2015 Australian Grand Prix at the season opener last weekend, with Rosberg finishing second. Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel finished third.
Rosberg said he hopes for a wet track next weekend, as it would make the event more exciting.
“We always expect rain to help overcome the difficulties,” he said. “This year it was a good start for our team in Melbourne (Australia). We have the best car and the best team. I’m very confident that we’ll dominate again.” — Bernama
