SINGAPORE, Aug 28 — Singapore has deployed a crisis response team from its High Commission in New Delhi to Nepal to render consular assistance to affected Singaporeans following the devastating flash flood near the Nepal-China border.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said both the Singapore High Commission in New Delhi and the Singapore Embassy in Beijing are also working closely with the Nepali and Chinese authorities.
“The Nepali authorities have warned that blockage remains upstream on the Nepal-China border river, potentially creating the risk of a second flood.
“Therefore, we strongly encourage Singaporeans in the affected areas to remain vigilant, monitor local news, and follow the instructions of local authorities,” it said in a statement yesterday.
Meanwhile Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan in a Facebook post said the Singapore government is putting together a humanitarian assistance package to support relief efforts in Nepal and address the immediate needs of affected communities.
“MFA is in close contact with the Nepali and Chinese authorities to provide consular assistance to affected Singaporeans, and is also in touch with their next-of-kin,” he said.
According to Nepal’s tourism board, nine Singaporeans are among hundreds of foreign nationals reported missing as the death toll from Wednesday’s devastating floods rose to 359 on Thursday afternoon. — Bernama
