SINGAPORE, Aug 28 — The Singapore government is contributing US$100,000 (RM402,900) to the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) humanitarian relief efforts following Wednesday’s devastating floods and landslides along the Nepal-China border.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said the fund would serve as seed money for SRC’s public fundraising efforts launched today.
“The contribution will support humanitarian relief efforts in Nepal and address the immediate needs of affected communities,” it said in a statement today.
Earlier on Thursday, SRC said funds raised from the public fundraising would be channelled through the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and other humanitarian partners in Nepal to support ground operations and address humanitarian needs.
The organisations also pledged S$50,000 (RM158,390) in humanitarian aid to support immediate relief efforts in Nepal, including the distribution of drinking water and essential emergency supplies such as tarpaulins, blankets, sleeping mats, first aid kits, and body bags.
According to media reports, the death toll from the devastating floods has risen to 475, with hundreds still missing as search teams scour rivers and downstream areas for survivors and bodies. — Bernama
