SINGAPORE, Sept 8 — What if death calls unexpectedly but you have a chance to save the person you love most from harm and utter that final “I love you”?

That is the premise of Ghost the Musical, a supernatural romance adapted from the popular 1990 film that starred the late Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg (who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of the story’s ditsy psychic Oda Mae Brown).

Set in modern-day New York, the tale follows a young couple Sam and Molly, whose lovey-dovey life together takes a tragic turn after Sam’s untimely death.

Trapped as a ghost between two worlds (hence the title), Sam desperately turns to a phony psychic for help when he learns that Molly is in danger.

To add a new dimension to a movie classic, Ghost the Musical presents the timeless fantasy about the power of love through stirring songs, energising dance routines and some of the most mind-blowing special effects ever seen in an on-stage musical.

From a ghost walking through a solid door, to inanimate objects taking on a life of their own, to a group of people seemingly levitating in mid-air, the musical has been mesmerising audiences worldwide with ground-breaking, state-of-the-art illusions since its West End debut in 2011.

To date, the show has garnered five Olivier and three Tony Award nominations.

Adapted for the stage by Bruce Joel Rubin (The Time Traveler’s Wife) from his Oscar-winning screenplay and starring an international cast, the musical retains much of the essence of the award-winning film, albeit updated to modern times.

Meanwhile, musical fans will enjoy the rocking original score by Grammy-award winners Dave Stewart (best known for Eurythmics) and Glen Ballard (who co-wrote and produced Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill).

And, yes, Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers from the movie’s memorable pottery scene will be featured as well — ditto the pottery scene. — TODAY
