SINGAPORE, June 1 — Only one could be the master of mixing at the Battle Of The DJen, a DJ contest that ended recently; and that was DJ LeNERD of the Grizzle Grind Crew.

Organised by Hotel Jen Orchardgateway and Alexander PR, and hosted by Marie Alexander, LeNERD pipped his competition to walk away with prizes that included not only a trophy, but also a stay at the Panorama Suite at Hotel Jen, a Pioneer MEP4000 multi-entertainment player and a stint as resident DJ at Hotel Jen Orchardgateway for three months.

“I’m definitely very happy,” said LeNERD after the win.

“It was very challenging and I had sleepless nights trying to come up with something great, but I managed to make it through the other rounds every week!

“But now, I want to go home and sleep because for the last two to three nights, I couldn’t sleep at all!” said the DJ, who included “live MC” elements to his set, such as sampling the host’s voice.

Noted DJ Andrew Teo (who goes by the moniker Andrew T), one of the judges on the night, LeNERD “did everything we were looking for”.

“His had close competition with another DJ who also did another good party set, but he took more risks and pulled it off very well,” said Teo.

The other judges on the panel included MediaCorp Radio DJ Jamie Yeo, as well as DJs Andrew Chow, Rattle, Inquisitive, Gemstarr, Eclipse and Jade Rasif.

For LeNERD, while winning the competition is more than a feather in his cap.

“DJ-ing is sometimes quite an abstract art that only other DJs will recognise.

“The crowd generally don’t know the amount of work put in, they only want to hear the songs they like. So hopefully events like this can help to show the skill that we put in,” said LeNERD.

Added Andrew, “Most of these guys are bedroom DJs or they learn from schools, so I think we need more competitions like to expose audiences to more new DJs who are really very good, but haven’t had the opportunity to come out of the woodwork.” — TODAY
