KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 — The Magistrate Court here today ordered Ellie Suriaty to pay RM7,200 compensation to a film production company after finding that the actress had breached the contract in the production of film 'KL Cinta Mandi Toq'.

Magistrate Sara Zuriati Zaharifudin made the decision in chambers after allowing the legal suit filed by White Merpati Entertainment Sdn Bhd against Ellie Suriaty, or her real name Ellie Suriaty Omar.

Speaking to reporters later, Ellie Suriaty's lawyer Suhaimi Saad said:

"The court found that there was no misinterpretation during the signing of the contract as claimed by Ellie Suriaty and that the company had managed to prove a liability in their claim."

Suhaimi said the court also rejected Ellie Suriaty's counterclaims for RM50,000 in general damage and RM20,000 in special damage from the company for allegedly issued a statement that she (Ellie Suriaty) had caused numerous problems after taking the advance payment of 25 per cent soon after signing the contract.

Ellie Suriaty was not present during the proceedings today.

On April 8 last year, the company as the plaintiff sued Ellie Suriati, 46, claiming a breached of contract which had caused the company to suffer a loss of RM20,000.

The company, represented by lawyer Edward Kuruvilla, sought RM33,500 in special damage, RM20,000 in general damage and interests of four per cent from the first day of her absence from the filming process or a similar date as deemed appropriate by the court.

The plaintiff and the defendant called three witnesses each throughout the
trial which began in December last year. — Bernama
