SINGAPORE, Jan 8 ― Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has paid tribute to Sir Run Run Shaw, saying the late media mogul would be fondly remembered by Singaporeans for his contributions.

In a post on his Facebook account, Lee said he was saddened to hear of Run Run’s passing.

Run Run died in Hong Kong early yesterday at the age of 107.  Lee said Run Run lived in Hong Kong, but was a good friend of Singapore.

“The Shaw brothers (Run Run and Runme) were a major player in our movie industry. Generations of Singaporeans enjoyed their movies and TV shows. The Shaw Foundation has contributed to many charitable causes here.

“I first met Sir Run Run in 1985 when I chaired an economic committee to review our economy. He flew in specially to share his ideas on growing media-related services with (President) Dr Tony Tan (Keng Yam) (then Minister for Trade and Industry) and me.

“Subsequently when I visited Hong Kong, I would often meet Sir Run Run for a meal, and to learn from his thoughtful views about Hong Kong and the world,” he said.

Lee also expressed his deepest condolences to Run Run’s wife, Mona Shaw, and the family. ― Bernama
