KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 — Bursa Malaysia opened higher today, supported by gains in financial, plantation and utilities stocks, as investors awaited Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) overnight policy rate (OPR) decision later in the day and tracked Wall Street’s positive overnight performance.
At 9.05 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 2.36 points to 1,711.10 from yesterday’s close of 1,708.74.
The benchmark index opened 2.42 points higher at 1,711.16.
Market breadth was positive, with gainers outnumbering losers 152 to 118. A total of 271 counters were unchanged, 2,231 untraded and 17 suspended.
Turnover stood at 127.56 million shares worth RM46.95 million.
BNM’s Monetary Policy Committee is scheduled to meet today to decide on the OPR, with consensus forecasts widely expecting the central bank to maintain the rate at 2.75 per cent for the remainder of 2026.
Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said Wall Street ended higher as bond yields eased, reducing pressure on stocks and providing some relief to investors.
“Even so, the US 10-year Treasury yield remained elevated at 4.782 per cent, attributed to higher crude oil prices, with Brent crude now trading above US$95 per barrel.
“As for the local bourse, we expect the FBM KLCI to trend within the 1,700-1,715 range today,” he said.
