KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — UMW Group’s automotive sales increased by 28 per cent in May 2023 with the delivery of 32,703 units compared with 25,641 units registered in April 2023.

The improved sales were driven by both UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) and UMW’s associate company, Perodua, which continued to fulfil their outstanding bookings.

In a statement today, UMW Holdings Bhd president and group chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad Fuaad Kenali said the group was pleased with the strong sales registered by both UMWT and Perodua in May 2023 as demand remained healthy.

He said, year-to-date (YTD), both companies have also registered higher sales compared with the same period in 2022.

“The total industry volume (TIV) has also increased by 12 per cent for the first five months of 2023.

“Moving forward, the group will continue to introduce competitive and exciting new models to meet its customers’ requirements,” he said.

UMW said UMWT’s sales grew by 18 per cent to 8,004 units in May 2023 against 6,767 units delivered in April 2023, and YTD May 2023, the company registered 39,990 units, representing an 8.0 per cent growth compared with the 36,972 units registered in the corresponding period in 2022.

As of May 2023, UMWT’s market share stood at 13.3 per cent, it said.

Meanwhile, Perodua’s sales surged to 24,699 units in May 2023, an improvement of 31 per cent compared with the 18,874 units delivered in April 2023, outperforming the TIV growth.

UMW attributed the strong sales in May to the improvement in production as well as enhancements to Perodua’s sales operations.

Perodua’s sales YTD May 2023 increased 15 per cent to 122,137 units compared to 106,179 units delivered in the same period in 2022.

For the first five months of 2023, it said Perodua’s market share increased to 40.6 per cent from the 39.1 per cent recorded for the full-year 2022.

Moving forward, UMW expects Perodua to continue to fulfil its outstanding bookings which continue to remain healthy. — Bernama
