KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9 — Local aerospace company Aircraft Inspection, Repair & Overhaul Depot Sdn Bhd (AIROD) has been awarded a US$25 million (RM109 million) contract to service the US Navy’s aircraft for the next five years from January 2016.
The deal inked in June as part of a direct trade agreement between the two countries will see the Subang Jaya-based firm employ 25 engineers and technicians to service 13 KC-130J aircraft belonging to the US Marine Corps aerial refueler transport squadron stationed in Japan.
“We are impressed with AIROD's and National Aerospace & Defence Industries Group's depot maintenance knowledge, experience and technical ability on the C-130 aircraft,” Lt Col Thomas A. Atkinson, the US Navy’s Fleet Readiness Center Western Pacific (FRCWP) commanding officer said in a statement.
This is not the first time AIROD has been chosen by the US military, the Malaysian company established in 1976 had previously provided services to the US Air Force under a previous US government contract.
It is also an authorised Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules Service Centre.
