KINABATANGAN, May 28 — A car driver sustained minor injuries when a section of the Sandakan-Lahad Datu main road at Km 90, near the Sukau Roundabout, collapsed early Tuesday following heavy rain.
According to the Sabah Public Works Department, the incident occurred around 5am within the R&R work area currently under construction.
An alternative lane is in place but only allows light vehicles, making the stretch impassable for heavy vehicles.
Kinabatangan District Police Chief Supt Ravi Duraisamy said they were informed that the road collapse occurred because of a groundwater swell from incessant rainfall.
He said a car was involved in an accident at the site, but no serious injuries were reported.
“The driver and passengers received treatment at Hospital Kinabatangan,” he said.
A contractor appointed under the Pan Borneo Highway project has built a diversion lane to ease traffic flow, he added. — Daily Express
