KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 — A man was charged in the Sungai Petani Sessions Court today with injuring his wife using several objects in March and April.

The accused, Rosmaini Abdul Raof, 43, pleaded not guilty after two charges were read before Judge Najwa Che Mat, Sinar Harian reported.

According to the first charge, Rosmaini allegedly caused grievous hurt to his wife, Nurfitri Moktar, 39, by striking her with a plastic chair and a hose at a house in Bandar Amanjaya around 5pm on March 29.

For the second charge, he was accused of hitting her again with a clothes hanger and a metal hanger at the same location around 9am on April 23.

Prosecutors charged him under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment and may also include a fine or whipping upon conviction.

State prosecution director Datuk Khairul Anuar Abdul Halim led the case, while Rosmaini was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) lawyer Ruzanna Abdul Rahim.

The prosecution informed the court that the accused could not be granted bail as he is currently serving a prison sentence in Kajang.

Defence counsel requested bail, citing that Rosmaini has two wives and supports 11 children, including seven still in school.

The court denied bail and fixed June 16 for mention and document submission.

Earlier reports stated the victim suffered serious injuries after allegedly being assaulted by her husband in Sungai Petani.

As a result of the attack, the 39‑year‑old civil servant miscarried at 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Police later arrested the suspect in Alor Setar after he fled the scene.

Authorities also confirmed Rosmaini was previously convicted in Johor Bahru in 2021 for assaulting his wife.
