IPOH, Sep 22 — A police report on Ipoh Timur MP Howard Lee Chuan How, as lodged by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) for allegedly coming up with his own interpretation of Quran verses, will be referred to Bukit Aman, said Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri.

He said the report was referred to the police headquarters as the initial report on the matter was made in Kuala Lumpur.

“Yes, we received a report yesterday from an NGO relating to a video involving the Ipoh Timur MP. So far, we only have received one report regarding this case in Perak.

“We have referred this report to the initial report which has been made at the Jalan Tun Razak police station in Kuala Lumpur.

“The case is being investigated by Bukit Aman’s Classified Crime Investigation Unit (USJT),” he told a press conference at the Perak police headquarters here.

When asked if Lee would be called to give statement over the matter, Mohd Yusri said it will be decided by Bukit Aman.

Yesterday, Sinar Harian reported that Jalinan Bersatu Sahabat (Jabat), a local NGO, had lodged a police report against Lee over the matter at the Manjoi police station here.

Perak Jabat president Amiruddin Mohd Daud said the police report was made in order to request an investigation into Lee for allegedly insulting Islam.

Amiruddin said that any matters related to the interpretation of the holy verses of the Quran should only be interpreted by those who are experts in the field, and not non-Muslims.

Similarly, Perak PAS Youth chief Hafez Sabri also criticised the DAP leader for interpreting and distorting the meaning of verse 59, surah an-Nisa through a video uploaded on the TikTok account belonging to the member of Parliament.

Hafez said Lee’s speech in the video was very superficial and contained elements of extreme provocation against the purity of Islam.

He said that Lee’s actions can be categorised as an offence under the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 223 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
