IPOH, Aug 7 — Four men were killed after the car they were travelling in crashed and burst into flames at KM220 northbound of the West Coast Expressway, near Sitiawan, today.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Sayani Saidon said they received a call on the accident at 5.11pm.

“On reaching the scene, our personnel found a Proton Saga ablaze with five victims inside — four burnt to death and one is safe,” she said in a statement.

According to her, the car is believed to have skidded and crashed.

She said the victims were working in Lumut and were on their way home to Ipoh.

The charred remains have yet to be identified but the victim who survived was identified as Shariff Mohammed Sidek Mohammed, 34.

Meanwhile, Manjung district police chief Mohamed Nordin Abdullah, in a statement tonight, said the driver was a 56-year-old man, while the front passenger was aged 50. The two victims seated behind were two men aged 45 and 53 respectively.

All of them were contract workers at the Royal Malaysian Navy Base in Lumut.

He said the driver is believed to have lost control of the car and rammed into the road divider before the vehicle landed in a drain on the left side of the road. The car caught fire immediately after.

Those with information are urged to contact traffic investigating officer Inspector Lily Suryana Roslaili at 013-6559693.

Meanwhile, the bodies of all four victims were sent to the Seri Manjung Hospital, Mohamed Nordin said. — Bernama
