KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — Over half of Malay voters in a recent survey either selected rival coalitions Pakatan Harapan (PH) or Perikatan Nasional (PN) as the one they will vote for in the Selangor state elections on August 12.
In the survey carried out by Endeavour-MGC on 1,068 Malay voters in Selangor, 42 per cent said they will vote for the ruling PH coalition in the upcoming Selangor state elections, followed by 33 per cent choosing the opposition coalition PN, 15 per cent for Barisan Nasional, one per cent for the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda), nine per cent saying they "don't know" and none backing the Parti Pejuang Tanah Air.
Muda yesterday announced its first batch of candidates for the upcoming state elections, with all four candidates to contest in Selangor.
In a report on the survey findings, local daily Sinar Harian said the combined support for PH and BN which are expected to work together would be 57 per cent.
A chart included in Sinar Harian's report showed the survey stating that the nine per cent who indicated “don't know” could have a high likelihood of voting for PN in Selangor.
Separately, local daily Sin Chew Daily reported on the same survey, which found that 61 per cent of the 1,068 Selangor Malay voters polled will vote based on the party, 28 per cent will consider the candidate, while other factors are religion (seven per cent), economy (three per cent), and race (one per cent).
Sin Chew Daily said none of the Malay voters polled mentioned corruption or democratic values as important factors they would consider when casting their votes.
The same report cited the survey findings as saying 68 per cent polled were satisfied with the current Selangor state government's performance, while 31 per cent were dissatisfied and one per cent had no opinion.
Similarly, 71 per cent were satisfied with caretaker Selangor menteri besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari's performance, while 28 per cent were dissatisfied and one per cent had no opinion.
Sin Chew Daily also reported 68 per cent being satisfied with the unity government's performance with 31 per cent dissatisfied and one per cent having no opinion, and said the survey found 69 per cent agreed with PH and BN continuing to be the federal government while 30 per cent disagreed and one per cent had no opinion.
The survey was carried out from June 12 to June 18 in all 56 state seats in Selangor, with the 1,068 Selangor Malay voters equally split according to gender.
Sin Chew Daily said the age groups of the respondents were ages 18 to 20 (six per cent), 21 to 29 (23 per cent), 30 to 39 (21 per cent), 40 to 49 (18 per cent), 50 to 59 (15 per cent) and 60 and above (17 per cent).
For the 1,068 Malay voters polled, 45 per cent are from the B40 income category with income levels below RM4,850, 40 per cent from the M40 middle-income category (RM4,850 to RM10,959), while the remaining 15 per cent were from the T20 income category (above RM10,959).
According to Sin Chew Daily, there are 1,910,841 Malay voters registered in Selangor as of April this year.
