PUTRAJAYA, July 4 — Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil today said that he will discuss the e-Tunai Belia Rahmah scams with the Cabinet tomorrow.
His comments come after reports that some eBelia recipients had fallen prey to scammers who offered to cash out the RM200 credit that they had received.
“Ministers will meet tomorrow, and I will try to get some preliminary information so that we can determine if it only involves MCMC or other agencies and elements as well.
“We are waiting for the Ministry of Finance to provide us with some information too,” he said after attending the Courier Industry Appreciation Day here today.
Last week, Bernama reported of advertisements online for withdrawal services related to the e-Tunai Belia Rahmah funds, following the disbursement to beneficiaries that began last Monday, with many being defrauded after using these services.
The Finance Ministry also discouraged recipients from converting their e-Tunai Belia Rahmah credit to cash, as doing so could expose them to possible scams.
According to the report, the ministry said these funds could be used at over 1.7 million businesses nationwide, to pay for services, and make online purchases through DuitNow, an e-payment system.
The ministry also said cashing out the funds defeated the aim of the programme, which was to familiarise youths aged 18 to 20 and full-time tertiary students with cashless payments while providing them with assistance.
