JOHOR BARU, April 8 — Johor PKR vice chief Jimmy Puah Wee Tse today said that he will provide free legal representation to the young couple who were arrested over a sex video clip.
The Tebrau MP hopes that a fair investigation will be conducted, especially against those who recorded and spread the video clips of the alleged incident on social media.
“I was informed that the person who recorded the video clips pretended to be a policeman and had also tried to ask the couple for their identity cards.
“It was when they refused to hand over their identity cards that the couple was threatened with the recording of their alleged sex act.
“The couple tried to flee, but were chased by those who recorded their acts until they were at the Pasir Putih police station (in Masai),” said Puah in a statement today.
The social activist and lawyer said that he and fellow lawyer Tan Chia Wei are prepared to provide pro bono legal advice as well as assistance to the couple.
“Tomorrow, I will go to the Seri Alam district police headquarters in Pasir Gudang to find out further details regarding the case and its latest status,” he said.
Earlier, Puah met the 17-year-old girl and the 22-year-old man, who are both at the centre of the sex video clip probe.
They were accompanied to the PKR Tebrau parliamentary service centre with their parents at 12pm.
Puah said after hearing the couple’s side of their story, he believes that any punishment under the law will have a negative impact on their future.
“The authorities are investigating the case under Section 377D of the Penal Code where if convicted, the punishment is imprisonment not exceeding two years.
“Those under the age of 18 will be sent to a rehabilitation school,” he said.
Puah said from a moral point of view, there is no denying that what the couple had done was inappropriate.
However, he said that imposing a prison sentence on the couple is too harsh.
On Friday, Magistrate Noorfazlin Hamdan approved a two-day remand application by the district police for further investigations under Section 377D of the Penal Code for gross indecency.
However, both were released on police bail at 4pm yesterday, pending investigations.
