BUTTERWORTH, Feb 21 — Penang is stepping up enforcement of the Penang Quarry Rules 2018 through ‘Ops Lumpur’, said state executive councillor for environment and welfare Phee Boon Poh.
Phee said the operation was mainly to monitor the quarrying activities for projects that had received approval.
“Our quarry inspectors will be going regularly to the quarry sites for inspection, and we will give notice about one or two days prior to inspection. The principal submitting person (PSP) and consultants will be required to answer our questions during the inspection,” he told reporters at the ‘Quarry Issues in 2023 and Beyond’ seminar here today.
He said it was crucial to regulate quarry rules to reduce the risk of flash floods in the state.
Penang now has nine permanent quarries, with seven on the mainland and two on the island. — Bernama
