KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 19 — Cameron Highlands MP Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor and Lanang MP Alice Lau were elected the new deputy Speakers of the Dewan Rakyat today.

Ramli, who is from Umno, garnered 148 votes while Lau bagged 146 votes.

Both deputies were nominated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and seconded by Deputy Prime Minister II Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

The candidate from Perikatan Nasional (PN), Masjid Tanah MP Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin who was nominated by chief whip of Opposition, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, received 74 votes.

During voting that lasted almost 30 minutes, all 222 MPs were given ballot papers on which they could vote for two candidates of their choosing.

Earlier, Johari, who is also a former Sungai Petani MP, was elected as Speaker after getting 147 votes, ahead of PN’s Radzi Sheikh Ahmad who received 74 votes.
