KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 — DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke today called on all parties to remain calm and patiently await the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong’s decision in which coalition will take control of Putrajaya as the post-election political impasse enters the third day.
Loke said the ongoing process is something new for Malaysia, but added that it is a normal process in a Westminster-style parliamentary democratic system in a situation where no party or coalition wins a simple majority of seats in the House of Representatives.
“DAP will always uphold the principles of Rukun Negara and defend the supremacy of the Malaysian Constitution.
“DAP also called on all parties and instructed all DAP members to maintain public harmony and order at all times,” he said in a statement posted on Facebook.
The Malaysian Parliament is hung for the first time in the country’s 59-year history following the November 19 general election.
The King has ordered coalitions and party leaders to notify former Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun of their numbers to form a new government by 2pm today.
This was an extension of the original deadline set for 2pm yesterday.
No coalition won a simple majority of 112 out of 222 seats in the Dewan Rakyat in the 15th general election.
The coalition with the most seats is Pakatan Harapan with 82 while Perikatan Nasional has 73.
The Barisan Nasional coalition, which had pushed for national polls to be held this year ahead of the GE14 expiry next year, only garnered 30 seats.
Two other major coalitions, the Gabungan Parti Sarawak and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah have 23 and six seats respectively.
