GEORGE TOWN, Oct 20 — Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow today commended the Election Commission (EC) for setting a two-week official campaign for the 15th general election next month.

He said the 14 days allocated was shorter compared to previous polls but added that it was fair to all political parties and independents who intend to contest as there would be nearly a month to prepare since Parliament was dissolved on October 10.

“Nomination day is on November 5, so it will have been 24 to 25 days after the dissolution of Parliament, it is enough time for all parties, whether the government or Opposition parties or individuals, to prepare.

“Compared to the past two elections, the campaign period is shorter but overall it is fair for all,” he replied when asked for his comment about the election dates.

He added that this is sufficient time for all contestants to reach out to the voters and promote their respective agenda.

Earlier today in Putrajaya, the EC announced polling day on November 19 with November 5 as nomination day and November 15 as the early polling date.

Chow was also asked to comment on incumbent Batu Kawan MP Kasturiraani Patto’s declaration not to contest in GE15, whether to defend the seat or stand elsewhere.

He said the party leadership accepted her decision with a heavy heart.

“We will closely consider candidates to be fielded as replacement for the seat,” he added.

He said DAP now has the luxury of time to look at the prospective candidates and their suitability since nomination is in three weeks’ time.

He said the DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke will announce the candidates the party will be fielding two to three days before November 5.
