PUTRAJAYA, June 28 — Tan Sri Halim Shafie has tendered his resignation as chairman of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Gobind Singh Deo confirmed today.

The communications and multimedia minister added that three others are also calling it quits, including Datuk Mazlan Ismail as chief operating officer (COO).

“Yes, it is true that they have resigned. Among them are the chairman and COO of MCMC,” Gobind told reporters here.

He said both tendered their resignations last Monday and it will take effect July 1.

“There are two others but we will announce that later,” Gobind said, adding that he will issue a statement later to explain the reasons.

Replacements for the vacancy will be announced soon, he said.

The minister also said he was considering splitting the chairmanship of the MCMC from the chief executive’s role, as part of structural reforms he intended for the commission and other federal agencies.

“There are several other suggestions to consider before making this decision, but as and when this decision is made, we will let you know,” Gobind told reporters here at his ministry’s Hari Raya open house.

Gobind also said that a special task force would be formed to study the possibility of merging state broadcaster RTM and state news agency Bernama.

He said in an exclusive interview with The Malaysian Reserve that the merger was being considered to consolidate overlapping functions and save costs.
