KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 — All Umno positions are open to be contested in its upcoming party elections, of which the date is yet to be set, said acting president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced today.

Following the Umno supreme council meeting this evening, Zahid said the party has agreed to open all post to party members, including the top positions — president, deputy president, vice-presidents, and wings’ chiefs — as long as the move abides by the party’s constitution.

“Therefore, the question of no-contest for party post does not arise. Hisham and I are open to have these positions to be contested by anyone who is qualified,” said Zahid, referring to vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

“Those who wish to contest in the party elections for any position should register themselves online from June 1 until June 17, at 5pm.”

The decision to open all posts for contest came after several Umno leaders insisted that the top party positions be contested by all party members.

The party election, which was to be held on April 19, was postponed for the second time in order for the Barisan Nasional to focus on the 14th general elections.

Prior to that, Najib had delayed the party polls for 18 months, which was initially scheduled to be held in October 2016.
