SINGAPORE, May 3 — While arguing with his girlfriend, Muhammad Azzwan Zainun Abidin, 28, slapped her, before pulling her back so hard that she hit her head and fractured her skull. He also punched the victim’s mother in the chest several times, and pushed her.

Azzwan, who is Malaysian, was sentenced to six months’ jail today after pleading guilty to two counts of causing grievous hurt to Siti Baizurah Abdul Latif, 30, and Badariah Ahmad.

One other count of voluntarily causing hurt to Baizurah was taken into consideration for sentencing.

The court heard that on October 25 last year, the unmarried couple, who have been together for six years and have four young children, argued over relationship issues at their Toa Payoh flat.

Azzwan told Baizurah that he was cheating on her with another woman, and they began shouting at each other.

Baizurah went to the kitchen, took a knife and hid it behind her back, which was noticed by Azzwan. After Badariah came to the flat to pass her daughter some clean laundry, Baizurah decided to leave.

Azzwan grabbed her arm to prevent her from leaving, took away the knife and passed it to his eldest daughter, who placed it back in the kitchen. The couple continued to argue after that.

Azzwan admitted to slapping his girlfriend “a couple of times”, and when she tried to leave the flat again, he forcefully pulled her back, causing her to fall and hit the back of her head. She fractured her skull, and fell unconscious.

Badariah tried to intervene, but Azzwan punched her several times in the chest and pushed her, causing her to land on her left wrist and fracture it.

Badariah then called the police, and she told them that “somebody (is) beating my daughter”.

During sentencing, District Judge May Mesenas told Azzwan to seek counselling when he is released from prison “so this kind of violence will not occur with (Baizurah) or any other lady you are with in the future”.

For causing grievous hurt by committing a rash or negligent act that endangers human life, Azzwan could have been jailed for up to four years and/or fined up to S$10,000 (RM29,509) for each count. — TODAY
