KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 — Candidates for Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat have pledged a clean and fair fight during the 14th general election (GE14).

Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Seri Raja Nong Chik, who lost to PKR’s Nurul Izzah Anwar by 1,847 votes in 2013, said he hopes his PKR rival would not try to win voters by spreading lies about him this time.

He was referring to an allegation made by his contender in GE13, Nurul Izzah, regarding the sale of a land in Bukit Kiara which ended in a defamation suit in July 2013.

“In the previous polls, I was accused of malicious things just a day before the elections. I hope there will be no more lies about me this time,” he said.

“We have been honest in what we do. You can ask the people here — they have seen how hard I work.

“It’s obvious that Izzah is going to a safe seat (Permatang Pauh) because she did not provide the best service here during her the two terms as an MP,” he added.

The matter was settled out of court in August 2014 after the PKR vice president issued an apology in an open court to the former Cabinet minister.

Newcomer PKR’s Fahmi Fadzil said he will rather focus his campaign on tackling the bread and butter issues faced by the people.

The 37-year-old, however, admitted it would be a tough battle to retain the seat for PKR.

“I’m like David in this situation, to be facing an entire Goliathan machinery,” he said, referring to Raja Nong Chik’s influence in the area while using a biblical reference.

“But we have a fair chance, although we may not be rich with money, we are ‘rich’ with the people’s support,” he told reporters.

Meanwhile, PAS Lembah Pantai treasurer Fauzi Abu Bakar who is a novice said he has his own plans for the Lembah Pantai folks if he wins.

“We will not play dirty because we have utmost confidence in our manifesto for Lembah Pantai, which we will soon announce.

“Although many people are not familiar with who I am, I think when they hear what I plan to do for them, they will be supportive,” the 58-year-old said.

The last time PAS fielded a candidate was in 1995 where Mohd Salleh Abbas lost by 13,389 votes to BN’s Tan Sri Shahrizat Jalil.
