GEORGE TOWN, March 10 — SRS Consortium is still awaiting approval from the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) for the railway scheme under the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) that it applied for almost a year ago today.
State executive councillor Chow Kon Yeow said they have also not been able to put the proposal up for public display and feedback as they have yet to receive the conditional approval for the Komtar-Bayan Lepas line.
“We will probably have to wait until after the general election to see if we can secure an approval for the project,” he said when giving updates to the PTMP during the Penang International Property (PIP) Conference here today.
“We have not given up on the project or given up in getting an approval, we will make full use of this waiting time to finalise the details of the whole project,” he said.
He added that he will not conduct another presentation on PTMP at the next PIP if there is still no approval then.
SRS, the delivery partner for the project, submitted the application for approval from SPAD the railway scheme on March 29 last year.
Since then, Chow said they have met with SPAD twice and received feedback on the scheme on November last year.
The railway scheme is part of the RM27 billion PTMP project.
The massive infrastructure project is a five-in-one public transport solution involving light rail transit or monorail, construction of highways, taxis, buses and cable cars.
The Penang state executive council approved the overall PTMP in December 2015 and the Komtar-Bayan Lepas LRT alignment in January 2016.
The detailed environmental impact assessment (DEIA) for the LRT will be submitted to the Department of Environment on April 2017.
