PETALING JAYA, Dec 29 — A territorial dispute between two gangs resulted in the shooting incident in Dengkil recently.

Selangor police chief Datuk Abdul Samah Mat said the gangs  Satu Hati and 08 were discussing matters of turf control when the incident took place at a restaurant on Sunday.

“The gangs were active in extortion activities around the area and matters turned ugly when disagreements between the members occurred with each side claiming the areas were theirs,” he said at the annual excellent service awards presentation ceremony at the state police contingent headquarters yesterday.

Police said three more suspects had been arrested, bringing the total to 20.

In the incident, the two gangs were involved in a fight after one gang member fired two shots, one of which struck a vehicle parked nearby.

Preliminary investigations revealed the misunderstanding occurred while the gang members were under the influence of alcohol.

Those arrested would also be investigated under the Prevention of Crime Act and Security Offences (Special Measures) Act, Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting, and Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971.

Abdul Samah also said Selangor saw a drop of 4.38 per cent in the overall crime index — from 32,069 cases in 2015 to 30,952 up to Tuesday.

The drop of 1,117 cases was attributed to the “aggressive policing” strategy adopted.

“These achievements are a reflection of the hard work and esprit de corps of the Selangor contingent,” he said.

However, he said despite the drop in the overall crime index, the indexes of four categories of crime had increased this year.

Snatch theft was up 40 per cent, gang robbery increased by 17 per cent, theft by 16 per cent, and causing grevious injuries by five per cent.

Abdul Samah said police had initially targeted a five per cent overall reduction in crime but was satisfied with the current results.

“We will continue to engage with the public and continue our policy of combating crime in the state,” he said.
